The Old Courts have won a contract with Battersea Arts Centre’s ‘Collaborative Touring Network’ (CTN) project. The project will see two week long theatre festivals in both The Old Courts and out and about at various other locations with the first taking place in September this year. The commissioned festivals will see a mixture of world class theatre “Spine Shows’ which were selected by the CTN partners together with performances from local talented actors as well as other art forms including street performances, live music, and much more as curated by The Old Courts. Dave Jenkins, Director at The Old Courts said “Back in March 2016, a collaborative team made up of: myself, fellow Director, Jonathan Davenport and Louise Fazackerly a local artist and tenant at The Old Courts, set off on a journey to learn more about the opportunity of joining the CTN. The Journey took us from an initial briefing in Manchester and a written proposal to a face to face interview in Battersea Arts Centre culminating in being awarded the space of the new CTN programme. “The Old Courts is passionate about making sure its artistic reach goes way past Wigan’s town centre and covers the borough as a whole and will be looking to make sure the festivals have an impact from the extent of the entire borough. “The new programme which has been funded by a multi-body award including large grants from the Arts Council England and the Esmee Fairbairn Foundation has been funded for a further 3 years and its new extension has been increased to allow for a further three towns to be added into the programme which are Medway, Peterborough and Wigan. “There was some very tough competition from towns across the country and it was an honour to be selected, I am very proud of our team and delighted about the impact and difference this project will make to our town over the coming years.” Jonathan Davenport said “It was a nerve wrecking journey which culminated in a very emotionally charged final interview, we worked tirelessly on trying our best to bring the prize home to Wigan and are all very excited about what it will bring. “There’s lots of work to do yet and we are still debating a name for the festival but watch this space for more information as we can guarantee we will be pulling out all the stops to bring cutting edge arts to the Wigan Borough.”
