Down To Earth is a new Arts Council England’s national Creative People and Places (CPP) programme. It invites Wigan residents to shape and create art and culture, focusing on the borough’s green spaces and community hubs as sites for cultural engagement. Drawing on the natural assets of the local area and Wigan borough’s well-known sense of humour and fun, the programme will invite local communities to shape arts and culture that can happen within minutes, rather than hours, of their homes, parks, schools and best-loved spaces.
The Old Courts were the lead organisation on the CPP consortium and drove the application forward helping to secure the funding for the Wigan following a number of years work towards this significant goal.
Since the project began, a variety of activity has been produced and a significant body of work has been carried out to raise the profile of the project and further develop how the project will be delivered.
Some highlights we worked on include:
• Extensive research including a public/community consultation to inform and help shape the branding, language and imagery. Commissioning of a freelance marketing specialist who delivered the sessions.
• On the ground audience research event at Pennington Flash. We designed and built a bespoke pop-up bar and Mocktails which were served at a promotional meet-and-greet style event at a popular local green space. This provided a huge number of community members with an insight into the forthcoming activity, the project as a whole and an opportunity to feed in to planning and share innovative ideas and useful contacts.
• We welcomed Ukrainian theatre company ‘Hooligan Art Company’ for a two week R&D residency for their latest show ‘Grain’ The 5 strong travelling party resided with us and joined us in our spaces at The Old Courts and Wigan Pier where the stay culminated in a sharing of the progress so far. The sharing was attended by local creatives, press and fellow theatre makers alike.
• We worked with Everyday on a exciting artist development programme called ‘Taking Shape’ which supported artists on their own personal development including site visits and practical skills such as first aid.
• We commissioned ‘The Social’ – an award-winning show by Not Too Tame theatre company who resided with us at The Old Courts for rehearsals and then onto various local social clubs. The run of the show sold out and was a resounding success
